Digital Intermediate - Colour Grading

One of the main roles performed by Steve Shaw (who, let's face it, is Digital Praxis!) is that of DI colourist - both as hands-on operator, and as DI supervisor. You can checkout his film history at the IMDB. Although not a complete list, it does give a flavor of the work Steve has been involved in.

What it obviously doesn't list is work performed in a technical support role, but that information can be found elsewhere within this website.

But here we are more interested in the role of DI, and of colour correction in particular.

However, it is worth reiterating here that DI is NOT just about colour correction - something that this website aims to help explain in some depth.

The following are some examples of before and after images graded by Steve for a feature film called Les Absintheurs (The Absinthe Drinkers), a film directed by John Charles Jopson, and helps show why DI is more than just colour correction... The final images were generated on the one DI system (iQ Pablo) with no additional VFX equipment.

Graded final, again with replaced sky, and this time with the power lines removed. It would have been easier and cheaper to have relocated for the close-up side-on shots, except that this was a single day's shoot for this scene and the light was fading fast, so a 'fix it in post' decision was the right one to make in this instance. And by using the correct DI system (not one only capable of colour correction) both the sky replacement and power wire removal were performed easily (by Steve Shaw) within the DI session - not a separate VFX one!
